| Athens Pride held its first fundraising event on March 24, a Pride kickoff event at Tasty World on March 24. We raised over $600!!! Thanks to Craig (Sasha) Jones for all the hard work that made the event so successful.
Our first-ever Athens Pride WEEKEND was very well-attended and a LOT of fun. Saturday, April 29, kicked off with the 2006 UGA LAVENDAR GRADUATION, held at Memorial Ballroom. Guest Speaker and Honoree Cathy Woolard gave a moving and hilarious account of her time at UGA, and the graduates were sent on their way with much cheer!
Sunday, April 30, Our Hope MCC led morning services recognizing Pride. The afternoon saw the annual Athens Pride picnic at Lake Herrick, with over 200 people attending (including Athens-Clarke Commissioners Kathy Hoard and Carl Jordan.) With lots of good food from attendees and Picnic sponsors, a great time was had by all. Highlights included a performance by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Choir, and Family Field Games for kids and adults! We wrapped up with the annual Women v. Men softball game, presented by Athens Bruisers, and a promise for another great time next year.
We also had a fun-filled - and extraordinarily water-logged - afternoon marching with the Athens Pride float ("All Rainbows Lead to Athens") in the Atlanta 2006 Pride Parade in June. Many thanks to Club Detour for sponsoring the float, and to Michael Shutt for heading the Float Committee (and for skillfully and valiantly leaping from his purple truck to rescue the tumbling arches from near-disaster on Peachtree!)
